No successful shed project is complete without first laying the foundation material for the structure. When deciding which material to use, it’s important to understand the differences between Greely Sand & Gravel’s gravel products.

¾” Clear Limestone consists only of ¾” gravel pieces, meaning water can easily drain through the gaps between the stones. This prevents water from pooling on the surface and allows it to filter through the area. Alternatively, 7/8” Crushed Limestone contains stones the size of 7/8” all the way down to fine Stone Dust. This type of stone compacts into a solid base layer, which does not allow water to run through.

If your shed is being placed directly on a pad of gravel and you want to drain water away from the foundation, ¾” Clear Limestone is likely the best product for you. However, if you want a solid base for a shed in an area where water pooling is not an issue, 7/8” Crushed Limestone would be best.

Hot Tubs

Hot tubs are a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors, even during the cold Ottawa winters. Like a shed, your hot tub requires a solid foundation to be properly and safely installed. As you want your hot tub to remain fixed in one position with no movement, you must excavate a deep layer of earth out of the area in order to make room for the base material. Most of your base material should be 7/8” Crushed Limestone, which creates a solid foundation for your hot tub. To make levelling the top of the base easier, we recommend using Stone Dust for the final 1-2” of your base. Combining these two products gives you a sturdy, durable base and easy to compact and level, ensuring your hot tub is securely grounded in your prepared area.

The first step in creating your interlock patio or walkway is to install the base material. Landscapers will typically dig out the area and then backfill it with ⅞” Crushed Stone, also known as granular aggregate (“GA”). Once the 4”-6” base layer is installed, spreading a 1”-2” layer of either stone dust or washed concrete sand over the top is essential. This is the layer on which your patio stones will be placed and allows you to level the stones quickly. Alternatively, a 4”-6” layer of Premium Bedding Stone can serve as a base layer and offer a more permeable layer under your interlock patio or walkway.  Once the layers are levelled, you can place your interlock stones in your desired pattern.  It may be helpful to have the rocks laid out ahead of time in the order you need to lay them.

Once all of your stones are laid, it is essential to ensure they will all stay ideally in place, even through years of wear and tear. Greely Sand & Gravel’s BEAST plastic paver edging helps keep your interlock stones tightly in place. These edging strips are 8’ long, 1.75” high, and 3” wide, providing stability to your patio edge while being flexible enough to adapt to your specific space. Pavers and interlock stones can be installed on either side of the edging once it is installed, and each piece of edging can be used to form both straight lines and curves. Additionally, BEAST plastic paver edging is easy to install with Greely Sand & Gravel’s 10” spiral nails, making the job quick and efficient.

Once your stones are placed and you’ve ensured the edges are adequately secured, Greely Sand & Gravel also offers polymeric sand to fill the gaps between your patio stones or pavers. This product ensures that stones stay set in place while not allowing any weed growth or gaps between stones. Greely Sand & Gravel’s polymeric sand is available in grey, beige, black, and white and can fill gaps as broad as 4”. This product will not stain your stones and is safe for use near pools and walking areas. Additionally, filling the gaps between your interlock stones with polymeric sand helps them to remain stable and secure, even throughout extreme weather and the freeze/thaw cycle that is so common in Ottawa!

This sand does not compact, allowing water to flow through it and reducing weed growth. Additionally, this product has undergone rigorous impact testing which ensures it is safe for children and for use in play areas, providing you with peace of mind.

Hydro Sand is a soft sand containing silt and clay, perfect for filling trenches and burying wires. Because it will compact if exposed to natural elements, it is not recommended for under playgrounds or on beach fronts. However, hydro sand is a wonderful option for smaller, contained sandboxes, as the sand will compact together nicely to build sandcastles. Its soft texture makes it a wonderful choice for burying utility wires with little risk of damage.

Finally, Greely Sand & Gravel’s Screened Sand is a natural screened sand that can backfill large areas or build up the grade around your home. This product should not be used in a playground or patio area; instead, it is a great value-conscious option for a project that requires a large quantity of sand.

Many homeowners share the same concern during the spring season: the potential of flooding or water damage on their property. The past few years in Ottawa have seen record-setting floods, resulting in very high groundwater levels in many areas. Even if your community does not experience high groundwater levels, major rainstorms can cause issues for homeowners, especially if your property lacks proper drainage.

So, how can you improve the drainage system around your home and decrease your risk of water damage? Grading around your home can drastically help with diverting water away from your foundation.

Grading around your home is ensuring that the soil, sand, or stone around your foundation slopes away from your house rather than towards it. Ideally, the ground should slope away from the foundation in all directions. This allows rainwater to flow away from the house rather than pool around it. Whether dealing with rainwater or groundwater, grading around your home will help keep your property safe from damage and your basement dry.

You can always seek professional help from a landscaping or foundation care company when it comes to grading around your home. However, there are many ways that you as a homeowner can be proactive about preventing water damage to your property.

A great place to start is by assessing the current grading around your home. Walk around the outer walls of your home and look for any areas where water may be pooling near the foundation. Pay attention to low spots or areas where the ground slopes towards the house. These are potential trouble spots that need to be addressed.

If you want to correct the grading around your home, you will need screened sand as a base layer and about six inches of topsoil to go on top of the sand. Remove any excess fill from the area and then install the sand, making sure to slope it away from your home. Use a rake and a level to ensure the slope is consistent. Once the grade has been corrected, spread the topsoil over the sand and then plant grass seed or lay sod, remembering to water frequently.

As mentioned above, many professionals can help you improve the grading around your home. A retaining wall or French drain might sometimes be needed to prevent erosion and improve drainage. As we come to the end of this remarkably warm Fall season, you may be wondering if you still have time to work on your lawn before the snow flies. In fact, Fall can be a great time to seed, sod, or overseed your property, to ensure that your grass is strong, healthy, and lush come Springtime!

Contrary to what you may think, cooler weather can actually be very beneficial when growing grass. Scorching hot summer temperatures can make it difficult for seeds to germinate. Additionally, your grass will require heavy and frequent watering in hotter weather, especially if you are trying to get fresh sod to take. When the temperatures drop a bit, grass requires less moisture, which will make your job easier, as less watering will be required!

While you may not be ready to tackle starting a whole new lawn from scratch, October can be a wonderful time to address any bare spots on your lawn and to overseed your grass. Throughout the summer months, your lawn can go through a lot of wear and tear, especially if it has endured a lot of hot weather. Take some time to walk around your property and identify any patches or areas that may require a little extra TLC.

For smaller areas, try adding some of our Greely Sand & Gravel Screened Topsoil to level the area. Then seed generously with one of our premium grass seeds. Water thoroughly and continue to water as needed throughout the following days and weeks. For larger areas, consider using a few rolls of sod on top of a solid base of Greely Sand & Gravel Screened Topsoil. Again, make sure to water thoroughly at installation and continue to water as needed.

If your grass seems to be thin in certain spots, it may be a good idea to overseed in those areas. Start by spreading a thin layer of Greely’s Topdressing Soil over the space you want to overseed. Once the soil has been gently raked through, sprinkle seed on top and water generously. Putting the work in during the fall months will help your lawn come back even more full and healthy in the Spring!
