GS&G's Organic Turf Blend - Good Enough to Play On

In keeping with GS&G’s dedication to research and product development, Greely Sand & Gravel Inc. was proud to introduce another fine product that helped rejuvenate well-used sports fields, such as soccer fields, football fields and Ultimate Frisbee fields. This engineered soil is a free-flowing sandy based soil where Category A compost is mixed and screened through a 5mm screen to allow for easy spreading with a topdresser. Our product has been used throughout the City of Ottawa on many fields and has had great results in a short time.

If your local ball field, playground or greenspace looks like it is in need of a little help – ask your municipality to contact Greely Sand & Gravel Inc., and we’ll take good care of your public spaces, quickly and effectively… Game On!

Sports field Topdressing Soil Hints:

  • Apply mix after the playing season to a maximum depth of 1/4" with a topdresser for a more even application.
  • It is most important not to over spread! As the saying goes "less is more."
  • Always aerate fields first before applying mix.

Canyon Stone - A Chip Off a New Block

Greely Sand & Gravel Inc. is proud to offer three different colours of Canyon Stone new in 2011, blue, brown and granite. With rougher natural edges, visible striations and incredible texture, these stones are a different breed from our large landscape stones. Stunning and always unique, these canyon stones can transform a garden into a masterpiece, providing a focal point for your landscape design.

There are hundreds of ways to achieve landscaping with rocks. When many people think about landscaping they focus only on flowers, ground covers, shrubs and trees. The elements missing in this type of landscape design are stones and rocks, which provide varying heights and contours that keep the landscape interesting and unique. Successfully integrating rocks into your landscape turns them into a focal point with each rock being placed to create a specific look and feel.

Accent boulders help you build levels into your landscape without bringing in extra soil. They also give the whole landscape design a unique character that impacts the view with a little drama and interesting angles. One of the keys to using accent boulders effectively is making them appear as if they literally grew out of that spot. Putting the bottom of the stone down about 4"-6" achieves that effect, particularly in combination with decorative grasses nearby.

Whether you want a splash of texture and natural colors for ground covering or a full-out rock garden, landscaping with rocks is a great choice. Rocks endure the elements and truly offer one-of-a-kind uniqueness in sizes and shapes, some of which are sure to fit your plans.

Awards

Each year, the Ontario Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (OSSGA) awards companies within the industry, and Greely Sand & Gravel is the proud winner of the Progressive Rehabilitation Award. This award recognizes ongoing progressive rehabilitation at a site in accordance with the original site plans and operational designs. Greely Sand & Gravel transformed a once operational pit into a recreational site with trees, grass, a beach, a playground area, a volleyball court, a boat launch, and a barbeque area — a great place for a weekend getaway of nature and fun for family and friends of Greely Sand & Gravel.

Community Involvement

At Greely Sand & Gravel, we believe that community involvement has the power to bring positive, measurable change to our community. The Pyper family and GS&G employees regularly give back to the Greely, Eastern Ontario and Ottawa communities through social responsibility, sponsoring local events, product donations, volunteerism, collaboration, sharing expertise and getting involved.

Community Involvement:

  • Greely Sand & Gravel was proud to donate to the Osgoode Village Community Association for its annual Canada Day celebration. Featuring many activities for the entire family to enjoy, including fireworks, live music and beer tents, we were thrilled to support this fun, family event.
  • In support of the Bethany Hope Centre, Greely Sand & Gravel provided donations of Greely’s Topdressing Soil and Adventure Playground Mulch. The Bethany Hope Centre supports vulnerable parents and their children, and our donations were used to support the organization’s garden & growing potential and to make an outdoor play area safer & more comfortable for children.
  • One of the activities that students at Pope John Paul II school in Hammond enjoyed for Catholic Education Week centred around spreading joy. The students painted and wrote positive messages on stones and hid them around the schoolyard to spread joy and positivity. Greely Sand & Gravel was delighted to donate Riverwash Stone to the cause.
  • The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa is an organization that we strongly support. The hospital’s Healing Earth Garden is designed for long-term patients and children with chronic disorders. The gardens, and the programs associated with them, have the potential to positively impact the hospital community in a number of ways. Greely Sand & Gravel donated cubic yard bags of Greely’s Topdressing Soil for organic growing and Cedar Mulch to help with the garden’s upkeep.
  • The Ottawa Food Bank’s Community Harvest program grows and collects nutritious, local produce for clients served by Ottawa Food Bank member agencies across the national capital region. Greely Sand & Gravel donated gravel this year to their Community Harvest Farm.
  • We also donated gravel this year to Holly’s Haven Wildlife Rescue. This wildlife refuge takes in orphaned and injured wild mammals for rehabilitation and release.
  • Not only did we sponsor the Ottawa Santa Shuffle in support of the Salvation Army and Bethany Hope Centre, Greely Sand & Gravel employees Samantha Fitzsimmons, Lauren Ripley, Shelley Millar, and Tara Hall laced up their sneakers to participate and show their support.
